CCGA empowers Career Counselors with relevant skills to cover industry demands in 2024.

As a measure to enhance the competence of Career Guidance Providers, the Ceylon Career Guidance Association CCGA held a workshop on 25th August 2024. This event was very critical in broadening the knowledge of career counselors, and more importantly, ensuring that their skills matched the existing trends in the industry.
The workshop had over sixty passionate career guidance professionals participating who were exposed to various modules essential for effective Career Counseling in this ever-competitive environment. These modules included:

Local Higher Education Guidance: Focused on local pathways to Higher Education, and equips counselors with the knowledge needed to have a constructive conversation with students seeking academic options within the country covering government and local private universities.

Vocational Guidance Basics: A career counsellor must carry the knowledge of the vocational sector in Sri Lanka. It’s a huge demanding requirement that needs to be possessed by a Career Counsellor. The session covered a rounded information collection of the vocational sector required in consideration of vocation related issues concerning choice.

Understanding Drug Counselling: Addressed the growing requirement of counselors in helping people coming out of substance abuse which is now one very important skill needed for a modern career guidance. Although Drug Counselling can’t be teached within a session, the workshop covered enough knowledge to understand the situation and how to engage when required in an effective way.

Foreign Education Guidance: Prepared counselors with the rest of the information they needed in order to help students who had dreams of flying to foreign countries to seek education; the information included an understanding of the processes of foreign institutions, cultural affairs, requirements to fly out, identifying validation and costs associated with.

Guidance towards IT Sector: Seeing the vastness of the IT Industry, this session covered what to choose toward the IT sector correctly. identifying the correct career key combination and the insights of job hunting as well as subject knowledge were shared.

Revamped Career Key: Recently, the Career Key that we were using for over two decades, the career key revamped and introduced to the sector as the new tool matching the present world. This provided key insights to the counsellor to use the revamped Career Key in an effective and correct way to assess the capability of people and guide them towards suitable careers matching that capability.

A Transformative Experience
Overall, the participants expressed satisfaction with the workshop, many noting that what they learned could be applied straightaway. The CCGA initiative has thus not only increased the effectiveness of the counsellors participating in the endeavor but also ensured that the counsellors will be in a better position to help guide individuals towards careers that are fulfilling as well as sustainable.
This aligns in such a way that the training suits the demands of the industry and prepares the next generation of workers adequately to take charge of a dynamic job market. This workshop will be a major step ahead of going a long way within the ongoing efforts to try and improve career counseling services across the country. Nevertheless, CCGA expects to actively use this knowledge shared through the workshop in the upcoming EDEX career Fair on 6,7,8 September at BMICH.
As the industries continue to evolve, so do the practices of career counselors. The CCGA’s dedication to the currency of industry-relevant training further guarantees that career guidance professionals will be on the leading edge of this sector of educational and vocational counseling. This workshop underscores this association’s dedication to empowering counselors who will do the same for countless individuals on their respective career paths.
